The Scene

Founded by Luis A. Alcala in 1972, family-owned Alcala's Western Wear has attracted both celebrities and regular folk with its bona fide cowboy apparel. In full view from blocks away, a nearly life-size neon bucking palomino marks the store's entrance.

The Goods

You'll be amazed by the more than 5,000 hats and 12,000 pairs of boots stacked high to the ceiling. One of the largest retailers of authentic Western wear in the Midwest, Alcala's also carries a wide selection of exotic skins like ostrich, alligator, lizard and eel. Boots start at $75 and go as high as $4,000 (for hornback alligator). Popular lines include Tony Lama and Lucchese for men, women and children. Cowboy hats, by Stetson and Resistol, are top sellers, but Alcala's also sells wool hats, colorful 10-gallon hats and even a showcased chinchilla fur hat ($5,000). Accessories includes buckles and belts, bolos and spurs, and even a cabinet full of perfume (does it smell like horses?).
