The Skinny Canadian-based techno DJ/producer Richie Hawtin has been on the Detroit electronic music scene since the late '80s. Under the Plastikman moniker (one of many aliases), he produced the minimal-yet-driving 1993 rave anthem "Spastik" -- a track that remains a staple on the playlists of many of the world's top DJs. In 1990 Hawtin and house DJ John Acquaviva founded Plus 8 Records. Together with its younger sibling, Minus Records, Plus 8 and Hawtin have helped launch the careers of everyone from Kenny Larkin to underground techno artists such as Concept and Theorem, not to mention providing an outlet for Hawtin's own tracks. His most recent effort, 1999's "Decks, Efx, & 909" (or "DE9") redefined the mixed CD, focusing on the use of electronic effects and a drum machine; and mixing, at times, three records at once. In the wake of the album and world tour, the duo have released a series celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the Plus 8 label.
The Crowd Bedroom techno connoisseurs, old-school ravers, and those who hopped on the bandwagon after "DE9."
